Voluntary Product Recall of Five Neutrogena and Aveeno Aerosol Sunscreen Products

Port-of-Spain, July 17, 2021 The Ministry of Health wishes to inform the public that Johnson and Johnson Consumer Inc, manufacturer of Neutrogena and Aveeno products, has advised of the voluntary recall of the 5 products listed below. The recall is due to the presence of low levels of benzene in some samples of these aerosol sunscreen products.

List of Neutrogena and Aveeno Sunscreen Aerosol Products Under Voluntary Recall

·       Neutrogena Beach Defense Aerosol Sunscreen

·       Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport Aerosol Sunscreen

·       Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense Aerosol Sunscreen

·       Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Aerosol Sunscreen

·       Aveeno Product + Refresh Aerosol Sunscreen

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen, i.e. a substance that could potentially cause cancer depending on the level and extent of exposure. Exposure to benzene in these aerosol sunscreen products, at the levels detected, would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences. However, out of an abundance of caution, all lots of these specific aerosol sunscreen products are being recalled.

Consumers are asked to refrain from purchasing and from using these products. Any of the products listed above that were already purchased should be returned to the place of purchase or to the relevant distributor.

Members of the public may contact the Office of the Director of the Chemistry, Food and Drugs Division at 623-5242, if necessary.

If required, the Ministry of Health will update the public via subsequent advisories as the matter develops.
