Trade Minister to attend the Forty-Fourth Meeting of the COTED in Georgetown, Guyana
May 9, 2017: Senator the Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry will lead a Trinidad and Tobago delegation to attend the Forty-Fourth Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED), from May 11-12, 2017 in Georgetown, Guyana. The Meeting would be preceded by a Preparatory Meeting of Officials over the period May 8-19, 2017.
The Meetings will address issues pertinent to regional integration under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) and intra-regional trade issue. Key amongst the CSME issues is the consideration of an Implementation Plan related to the comprehensive review of the CSME which covers, inter alia, Member States’ obligations as a member of the CARICOM and the status of implementation in Member States. The implementation plan also contains the challenges faced with implementation, steps to be taken related to each mandate, and possible timeframes.
The Trade and Industry Minister will discuss trade issues related to intra-regional trade, and the future direction of CARICOM’s external trade policy and strategy. Such matters have become even more relevant given the changing trade landscape within the USA, and Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, a grouping with which CARIFOURM (CARICOM and the Dominican Republic) has signed the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
