Tourism Minister visits Maracas
Tourism Minister, the Honourable Randall Mitchell, visited Maracas Beach yesterday to get a first-hand view of works underway following Monday’s commencement of UDeCOTT’s administration and management of the facilities there.
A Facilities Management Contract (FMC) between the Ministry of Tourism and UDeCOTT was signed on December 24, 2018.
Minister Mitchell said he was confident the restoration and upgrades to the beach facilities will be completed to the satisfaction of all. Mitchell who assumed the tourism portfolio in April 2018, was accompanied by UDeCOTT officials on today’s exercise.
He said: “Very early in my tenure I recognized the need for an experienced facilities manager at Maracas and suggested that the facilities management services of Udecott be used. I am happy to come to Maracas today to see the quality of work that has already been done.”
Work is currently underway to clean the beach by removing debris such as fallen branches and exposed steel and concrete from prior construction. Work is also being done to level the sand on the beach to determine the areas that require additional sand.
UDeCOTT is expected to ensure that Maracas beach operates to an internationally accepted standard with optimum value to all patrons.
The Facilities Management Contract provides for Udecott to be responsible for:
- Oversight of grounds maintenance
- Oversight of vendors
- Oversight of existing and improvement of security services
- General events management
- Garbage removal
The Ministry of Tourism maintains oversight over the facility and looks forward to a fruitful partnership with UDeCOTT to ensure the safety, security and general enjoyment of those who visit Maracas Beach.
