Sport Minister opens FIH Hockey World League Tournament
March 27, 2017: The FIH Hockey World League Tournament kicked off to great start at the National Hockey Centre, Eastern Regional Sporting Complex, Tacarigua. The USA played Canada at the opening match on 25th March 2017, with Canada finishing victorious at 4-2. Later that evening, Trinidad and Tobago took the turf to face Russia with a celebrated win by Russia at 3-1.
The Honourable Darryl Smith, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, opened the tournament and greeted the players from the participating teams. Minister Smith had indicated previously, that it is important to highlight the sport at the primary school level so that new players can be exposed to the sport at an early. He wished the players all the best and stated they are the stars. He urged them to take the opportunity to perform well and shine. He also thanked all the sponsors for coming on board and those who played a part to bring the event to fruition.
The FIH Hockey World League Tournament is scheduled to end on April 2, 2017, where we would see eight participating teams from around the world. The participating teams include Canada, Chile, USA, Barbados, Japan, Russia, Switzerland and Trinidad and Tobago. This action packed tournament gives hockey fans an opportunity to see their team go all the way to the World Cup and Olympics.The Hockey World League shines a spotlight all around the world where even the smallest hockey playing nations get to participate.
