Social Welfare Officers Receive Training on NIS Benefits
November 6, 2017: Forty-three (43) Social Welfare Officers attached to the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services participated in a workshop which was hosted by the Corporate Communications Office of the National Insurance Board (NIB). The workshop was held at NIB’s Corporate Headquarters, at 14–19 Queen’s Park East, Port of Spain on November 02, 2017.
Greta Stephen-Henry, NIB’s Executive Manager, Insurance Operations, joined by Cheryl Isaac-Munroe, Manager of Corporate Communications and Rajesh Bassant, Public Relations Officer, NIB were present to welcome the Ministry’s staff.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, Jacinta Bailey-Sobers during her opening remarks, highlighted that NIB and the Ministry were two (2) entities with similar functions in providing critical service to the vulnerable and the indigent in our society. She also indicated that the Ministry acknowledges the importance of customer care, the need for service excellence and a more client-focused approach to its social service delivery, and was therefore pleased to collaborate with the NIB. Also present at the workshop were Vijay Gangapersad, Acting Chief Technical Officer at the Ministry, as well as Acting Director of the Social Welfare Division, Cheryl Lane-Pereira.
Stephen-Henry indicated that the NIB looks forward to ongoing collaboration and working relationship with the Ministry for upcoming initiatives, inclusive of the removal of the Life Certificate process for recipients of the Senior Citizens’ Pension. The workshop provided comprehensive information on all of NIS’s benefits. The Social Welfare Officers were very interactive during the workshop and were happy to receive additional information and clarification on many issues. The Ministry will also be conducting a similar workshop with NIB’s staff on its suite of grants, in the near future. It is anticipated that this joint venture will improve the services of both entities towards a more integrated approach and efforts in achieving ‘joined up’ government services.
