Range of HIV/AIDS activities, sensitization sessions for Carnival 2018
The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services continues to play an essential role in the Government of Trinidad and Tobago’s multi-agency response to the HIV epidemic, through its HIV Unit. In this regard, the Ministry’s HIV Unit works alongside the National AIDS Coordinating Committee (NACC), of the Office of the Prime Minister to implement awareness and prevention strategies at the local level.
Some of the core functions of the Ministry’s HIV Unit include:
- Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS within the Ministry;
- Facilitating the development of Information, Education and Communication, Material and other Behaviour Change Communication strategies on HIV/AIDS;
- Coordinating programmes for the delivery of HIV and AIDS education services internally (staff) and externally (the Ministry’s clients);
- Facilitating the implementation of the HIV Workplace Policy within the Ministry.
The HIV Unit remains part of the Ministry’s structure, and has several activities on the agenda for fiscal 2018, which include a HIV Carnival booth/sensitization on February 6th and 7th at the Head Office, located at the CL Financial Building St Vincent Street from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Among the activities will include an Edu theatre, free counselling, a video presentation and interactive games where prizes will be awarded to participants. Both Ministry staff members as well as the public who visit the office over the two days will have the opportunity to participate.
This initiative is in keeping with the Unit’s thrust to sensitize and raise the consciousness of both the staff and public on HIV and its related issues in furtherance of the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services’ quest toward “Helping, Empowering and Transforming lives”.
