MusicTT's Steelpan Business a Success

Port of Spain, 24th November 2020: Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2020 has come to an end and MusicTT has successfully hosted its 5-day seminar on The Steelpan Business. This initiative was made possible through the partnership with Youth Business Trinidad and Tobago (YBTT).

Over the week, MusicTT held a series of webinars exploring various topics within the Steelpan business, including Jobs in the Steelpan Sector, Marketing and Promotion, Investments, Steelpan Export, Steelband Management, Grant Writing, Sponsorship and Business Plan Development, to name a few. They also hosted various segments under the banner titled ‘Conversations with an Entrepreneur’ hosted by Akua Leith, with several key professionals in the steelpan business from areas such as education, merchandising, tuning, building, performance and more.

The webinars were well subscribed with about 25-30 consistent live attendees per session and the numbers are expected to rise to well over 120 per webinar in replays. The interviews were streamed through Facebook and YouTube, reaching about 2000 viewers – this too is expected to rise significantly over time. The top three most popular interview segments were Conversations with the National Steel Symphony Orchestra (NSSO), Conversations with Josanne Francis of C.A.F.E and Conversations with Kaijah Codrington of Codrington Family Institute. All webinars and interviews can be accessed via MusicTT’s YouTube Page under the playlist “The Steelpan Business” which forms part of the Music Export Academy initiative.

Melissa Jimenez, General Manager of MusicTT, stated, “This was a vision I had since early 2017, before my return back home to Trinidad. I would have spoken about this venture at lengths with various colleagues at the time. Though our scale of vision for this was certainly much larger, everything has to start somewhere. It was certainly a pleasure to host this event [The Steelpan Business – Entrepreneurship Series] and we could not have done it without our various partners and facilitators. Their contribution was as valuable as it was unique. We look forward to future endeavors as we continue to build capacity to develop our music stakeholders and the wider industry.”
