Ministry executive meets with San Juan Boys’ and Girls’ PTA
The Strategic Executive Team of the Ministry of Education met with the principals and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the San Juan Boys’ and Girls’ Government Primary Schools on Tuesday 6th February 2018, at the school’s temporary location at Eastern Main Road, Tunapuna.
President of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA), Mr. Lynsley Doodhai and representatives of TTUTA were also on hand for the meeting.
The meeting focused on finding a common place of resolve to some of the issues brought forward by the schools’ PTA President Mr.Joel Scott. Mr. Joel Scott highlighted issues with the accommodation for students where they are picked up and dropped off on a daily basis and questioned when the new school building would be completed. In responding to his concerns Minister of Education, Anthony Garcia acknowledged the concern of the parents and thanked them for their patience as the Ministry worked to have the new school completed in the shortest time possible.
Minister Garcia explained to the parents and officials gathered, that the cause of the delay in the completion of the school was an audit that had been conducted into all of the existing contracts when the Government assumed office in 2015. The contractor who had been working on the school was red flagged and this inherently delayed the possibility to resume construction of the new schools.
Assurance was given to the meeting that every effort is being made to have the resumption of construction of the school expedited. Minister Garcia also committed to having the existing bus shed and toilets where students assemble daily at the old school location repaired to ensure student comfort and safety daily. The San Juan Boys’ and Girls’ Government Primary School is currently at 58% completion.
