Inaugural national symposium on the family
The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services in collaboration with the Division of Gender and Child Affairs, Office of the Prime Minister will host an inaugural National Symposium on the Family from June 27th – 28th, 2018 at the University Inn and Conference Centre, St Augustine. The theme for the Symposium is, “Supporting Families as the Bedrock of our Society”.
The objective of the Symposium is to stimulate a national discourse on issues relevant to healthy family functioning in Trinidad and Tobago. According to the National Development Strategy, Vision 2030: “The family is recognised as the most basic social institution and the primary socializing agent of our nation. As such, the national strategic goals include the protection and support of the family. Given the numerous challenges that threaten this foundational unit, including domestic violence, child sexual abuse, elder abuse and juvenile indiscipline and violence, there is need for a national conversation to take place to address some of these issues and share on experiences and strategies required for enhanced family life in Trinidad and Tobago. The proposed Symposium therefore will seek to facilitate this dialogue with the ultimate goal of developing a National Policy on the Family for Trinidad and Tobago.
The Symposium will incorporate the official launch of a National Values, Attitudes and Behaviours Campaign for Trinidad and Tobago, which is key to fostering family life and driving sustainable social development. It will also include valuable networking opportunities, fora and discussion groups, speaker presentations, workshops as well as an exhibition showcasing organizations, groups and agencies that support the family.
