Garbage Collection resumes in the Tunapuna/Piarco Region
October 20, 2017: The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government wishes to inform the public that the Garbage Collection Unit of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation has resumed its regular garbage collection services.
Minister Kazim Hosein on receiving several complaints from the public says “Scavenging remains an essential service to the communities and failure to collect garbage on a regular basis can lead to numerous health risks. We at the Ministry would like to assure the public that the necessary measures will be taken to ensure that contractors perform their duties as public servants and put people first. Inefficiency and poor performance will not be encouraged as we remain committed to working with all Corporations to ensure that the burgesses are able to access the services which are crucial to our daily lives. I would like to commend the Chairman, Council and members of Administration for the efforts made to resume the collection of garbage in the region.”
Chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation, Councillor Paul Leacock commented on the situation saying, “The TPRC has noted the underperformance of many of their scavenging contractors and has taken action which has resulted in a resumption of the full service. We will use all the options legally available to minimize the possibility of any reoccurrence and improve the current scavenging services of the Corporation.”
The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government has taken into consideration the concerns raised by representatives of the people and citizens likewise and will be requesting an urgent meeting with all key stakeholders in an effort to ensure continuous and efficient garbage collection and other services rendered by contractors.
