Construction of driveway for paraplegic teacher
The Christmas season is a time of giving, showing care and love and this is precisely what the principal and staff at the Malick Secondary School did for one of their teaching colleague, Ms Natasha Lewis, who was born with Cerebral Palsy and is wheelchair bound.
In August 2018, the school’s Principal Harry Jaikaran, and staff successfully negotiated with two corporate sponsors who responded positively to their request for assistance.
Massy Foundation funded the construction of a fully equipped washroom for differently able persons and is easily accessible to Ms Lewis. This was completed during the vacation period. The second sponsor National Lotteries Control Board is sponsoring the construction of a driveway from the school’s main car park to the Block L where Mr Lewis class is located. This will allow her to circumvent all staircases to reach her classroom.
The sod turning ceremony to commence the construction of the driveway took place on Friday 14th December, 2018. The facility is expected to be completed in time for the New Term 2019.
Commenting on the initiative, the Honourable Anthony Garcia, Minister of Education commends the school administration for displaying real love towards one of their colleagues which is in keeping with the Christmas spirit. He said this action clears also demonstrates the kind of positive partnership which exists among educational stakeholders to the benefit of the nation’s Education System.
Ms Lewis was assigned to Malick Secondary School on September 3rd 2014 as a TVT 1 teacher to teach Dressmaking/Tailoring. She possesses a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Degree from UTT. She is also a versed Graphic Artist.
