The Caribbean Regional Youth Council partnered with several youth-led organizations and the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs (MSYA) to host the first ever Caribbean Youth Leaders' Workshop; Policy and Advocacy Training for a sustainable Caribbean. The workshop was held at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th January, 2018 and saw delegates from approximately ten (10) countries in attendance.

The workshop was aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills needed for effective advocacy, activism, lobbying and policy drafting amongst members of National Youth Councils and youth Organizations within the Caribbean. Additionally, it sought to foster a greater understanding of the concepts of advocacy, lobbying, policy, entrepreneurship and the role of the youth in influencing change in the governance framework.

In his feature address, Honourable Darryl Smith, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs commended the Caribbean Regional Youth Council on their initiative and informed that the Ministry was honoured to be a part of the project.  He said “I implore the Trinidad and Tobago delegates to get on board with the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs as we undertake the task of revising the National Youth Policy.” The MSYA will host a series of consultations on the National Youth Policy during the period February 20th to March 15th, 2018.

Kimberly Gilbert, Board Member for Training and Development in the Caribbean Regional Youth Council said “the workshop should see improved participation and representation as it relates to advocacy and networking.” It is the hope of the coordinators that the delegates would take the information received during the workshop back to their respective countries and meaningfully impact the lives of their fellow young leaders.
